Trumpet
Solo and chamber performer.
Rubén Marqués Colomer's life is linked to the trumpet. Since he began his studies at the “Santa Cecília” Musical Society in Guadassuar, his hometown, he has come a long way, which has led him to currently occupy the position of solo trumpet of the Valencian Community Orchestra and that of professor of this instrument at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Aragón (CSMA).
His academic training was carried out at the “Joaquín Rodrigo” Higher Conservatory of Music in Valencia with Vicente Prats. Later, he expanded his studies and participated in master classes with such renowned trumpet players as Maurice André, Pierre Thibaud, Roger Delmotte, Bernard Soustrot and Maurice Benterfa.
In 1986 he began his professional career, obtaining the position of assistant soloist in the Orquesta Ciutat de Barcelona, today the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and National Orchestra of Catalonia. Four years later, he was admitted by competitive examination to the Valencia Orchestra, where he played the role of solo trumpet until 2006. That same year he auditioned to join the newly created Orchestra of the Valencian Community and, after requesting a leave of absence from the previous group, he joined the OCV as solo trumpet, by decision of the titular director Lorin Maazel.
During this time, he has had the opportunity to play with such masters as Maazel himself (principal conductor of the OCV between 2006 and 2010) and Zubin Metha, principal guest conductor. He has also collaborated with other distinguished conductors, including Valeri Gergiev, Riccardo Chailly, Georges Prêtre, Jesús López Cobos, Gianandrea Noseda, Plácido Domingo and many others. In the 2013-14 season, after being a finalist in the auditions for the position of principal trumpet, he collaborated with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, conducted by Mariss Jansons and Michael Tilson Thomas.
He is also an active soloist and chamber musician. As a soloist he has performed with the Madrid Symphony Orchestra, the Lisbon Symphony Orchestra, the City of Granada Symphony Orchestra, the Collegium Instrumentale, the Moscow Virtuosi, the Reina Sofía Orchestra of Madrid and the Valencia Orchestra. With the latter orchestra he premiered Amando Blanquer's Trumpet Concerto and Orchestra in 1.991.
His foray into the chamber music repertoire came with the Vesperale Quartet, with which he recorded the CD Toot Suite by Claude Boling. He regularly participates in chamber music cycles in different auditoriums in Spain and abroad. Within this musical genre, he is a frequent collaborator with the Joaquín Rodrigo Chamber Orchestra, Orquesta les Arts, Cadaqués Orchestra, Mediterranean Symphony Orchestra, Collegium Instrumentale and the Stresa Festival Orchestra (Italy).
It is also important to highlight his teaching work as a trumpet professor at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de les Illes Balears and the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Aragón, a position he continues to hold today. In addition, he gives master classes and works with Youth Orchestras, preparing the trumpet section.
