Matt Baker is a versatile and virtuoso instrumentalist who masters a variety of styles ranging from classical to jazz, from Celtic to tango, and most popular music in between.
Born in the USA, he moved to Valencia after being selected by Lorin Maazel and Zubin Mehta to be the principal double bassist of the Symphony Orchestra of the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía.
From a very young age he was requested by prestigious symphony orchestras such as the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic, the Halle, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra.
As a soloist in chamber music, jazz, Celtic music and theatre ensembles, he has toured and recorded in over 20 countries with critically acclaimed performances in magazines such as Strad, Gramaphone, The Times, Ritmo, Chamber Music Magazine, and Bass World among others.
Matt Baker is the founder of the chamber groups Elan Quintet, which is recording George Onslow's quintet cycle for Naxos, and the Valencia Baryton Project, in which he debuts his other musical talent playing the Baryton, an ancient 16-string instrument. On that instrument he has been featured on radio programs such as Classic FM (UK), RNE (Spain), Radio Chile, and MEC (Brazil).
In the field of jazz, Matt Baker has worked with great masters such as Dave Samuels, Bob Mintzer, Ryan Kisor and Terri Lyne Carrington among others.
