La High Performance Music School (ESMAR) and the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències organized a free concert to celebrate International Jazz Day, sponsored by UNESCO, which will take place on the Paseo Norte of the Museu de les Ciències, last Sunday, April 30. Ximo Tebar, renowned guitarist and head of the center's Jazz and Modern Music Department, conducted the ESMAR Jazz & World Music Big Band and will bring together artists such as Ricardo Belda, Eva Catalá, Jose Luis Granell, Will Martz, David Pastor, Pepi Taveira... as well as teachers and more than 20 students from the Higher Degree.
With this musical event, on a day that was celebrated in more than 200 countries, the ESMAR Spring Jazz Festival was closed after various concerts, master classes and workshops on jazz and music production at the facilities of the high school, located in the complex Iale International School in l'Eliana.
The ESMAR Jazz & World Music Big Band is one of the centre's largest groups, incorporating the innovation of additional instrumentation (strings, woodwinds, vocal choir, etc.), as well as the interpretation of original arrangements and repertoires of different styles of jazz, blues, world music and modern music with new technologies, under the creative and sound philosophy of jazz and contemporary music.
Tebar, an international jazz reference supported by outstanding masters such as Benny Golson and George Benson, has thanked the collaboration of the Generalitat Valenciana and the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències in the organization of this initiative and has assured that “this concert will be a celebration of relevant artists for whom music, in general, and jazz in particular, represents a bridge and a channel of communication between different cultures.”
The musician, winner of the National Jazz Award from the Ministry of Culture in 1989 and 1990, emphasizes that “ESMAR has a firm commitment to musical education, innovation, exclusivity and a high level of rigor, quality, and educational excellence, with teachers who have a prestigious international career as soloists and performers and high-level students who will participate in this event.”
Herbie Hancock, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue and Director of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz, is the driving force behind this international commemoration, together with Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO. The legendary pianist and composer believes that this day “is an opportunity to celebrate the richness of this musical tradition, as jazz is a multiple reality that fosters intercultural dialogue.”
Unesco and jazz
UNESCO believes in the power of jazz as a driving force for peace, dialogue and mutual understanding, and the day aims to raise awareness of its virtues as an educational tool and vehicle for unity, strengthening cooperation between peoples and also contributing to the construction of more inclusive societies.
The organization believes that jazz breaks barriers and creates opportunities for tolerance; it is a form of freedom of expression, and symbolizes unity and peace; it reduces tensions between individuals, groups and communities; it promotes artistic innovation, improvisation and the integration of traditional music into modern musical forms; it stimulates dialogue between cultures and facilitates the integration of marginalized youth. For this reason, the international community proclaimed April 30 as International Jazz Day during the UNESCO General Conference in 2011.
Values: study, creativity, respect…
The ESMAR Spring Jazz Festival hosted the educational workshop Jazz, music and sociological phenomenon led by Tébar and taught to 6th grade Primary and 1st grade ESO students on April 26. It was a success in terms of participation, with students enjoying screenings, a talk, a live music performance and a participatory debate to encourage cooperative work and multiple intelligences, through the values of jazz: order and freedom, effort, technique and inspiration, structure, innovation and improvisation, study and creativity, respect for other cultures…
On Saturday 29th, as a prologue to the International Jazz Day concert at the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències, ESMAR will host various free master classes by Ximo Tebar (guitar, combo, rhythmic keys and modern music); Eva Catalá (Latin percussion); Jorge Pérez (studio and live recording techniques); Josvi Muñoz (saxophone and clarinet, languages and modern music, improvisation concepts); Nacho Mañó (music production, self-publishing, intellectual property, relationship with record companies and digital platforms); Pepi Taveira (drums); and Ricardo Belda (piano, harmonic simplification). The culmination will be a concert in the school auditorium at 19pm.
Innovative music education
ESMAR provides teaching through an innovative model of musical education based on a curriculum that prioritizes practical teaching over theory, experiences in real professional environments and links with the labor market of the sector. It offers comprehensive training to practice the musical profession today in its different specialties: Performance (Piano, Symphonic Instruments, Old music, Canto, Modern Music and Jazz), Pedagogy (all instrumental routes), Production and Management y Address.
The project, which has more than 250 students studying a wide range of academic degrees, master's degrees, and advanced level music training courses, has established itself as a real and very attractive alternative that is committed to specialized and high-level music training. The ESMAR website offers information and documentation on the entrance exams for the 2023/2024 academic year, for which interested parties can now register.
